It was one of Disney Channel’s most iconic romances.
But fans hoping that Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez, the lovebirds from High School Musical, are still going strong will be sorely disappointed after their “messy” fates were revealed on the Disney+ spin-off show.
The fourth and final season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series hit the streaming platform on Wednesday, and one of the original stars revealed that the pair are in “relationship counseling.”
The meta-themed show featured performances by Corbin Bleu (Chad), Monique Coleman (Taylor), Lucas Grabeel (Ryan), and Kaycee Stroh (Martha), all reprising their roles from the original film series.
And in an early season four scene, Corbin shared updates on all the East High regulars in the fictional High School Musical movie.

He shared that Taylor and Chad are happily married, that Martha is an acclaimed choreographer and that Ryan is preparing to welcome twins with Pentatonix lead singer Scott Hoying and getting ready to welcome twins.
Corbin added that while Troy and Gabriella are still together 15 years after graduation, they are undergoing “relationship counseling.”
The revelation stunned fans, who had hoped the high school love affair would prove unbreakable, and many took to Twitter to share their reaction.
“Lol Gabriella and Troy in couples therapy yikes LOL,” one posted, while another added, “troy and gabriella in couples therapy omg????”
A third added: “Whoever wrote what the future of Troy and Gabriella looks like was so messy before that. I clucked.’
In the opening number of the season, High School Reunion, Coach Bolton (Bart Johnson) asked Martha if she’d heard from Troy and Gabriella, and she replied, “They’ve been silent on the group chat.”
Fans had been hoping stars Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens would make cameos in the final season of HSMTMTS, but they were nowhere to be seen.
Series creator Tim Federle told PEOPLE earlier in 2022 that an invitation had been issued to all of the original HSM stars to appear in Season 4.

But he said at the time, “It’s a matter of juggling and holding my breath and praying and lighting candles and seeing who wants to come and play with us.”
The third High School Musical movie ended the story of Troy and Gabriella in 2008, when the basketball star accepted joint awards to study sports and musical theater at the University of California, to stay close to his girlfriend at Stanford.
HSMTMTS came to an end when lovebirds Ricky and Gina were able to continue her romance, after her big Hollywood breakout role was moved from New Zealand to Salt Lake City.
“If this is goodbye to High School Musical for now, we all still love it, and that would be good enough,” Tim Federle told EW on set last year.
“The natural cadence of the show at East High is that we’re telling one semester per season, so season five would almost certainly be the last year of the second semester, but built into High School Musical 3, there’s a graduation sequence, so it’s almost like we’re emotionally graduating in season 4.
“They’re literally wearing red gowns at the end, so you see them bow and say goodbye and thank you.” That feels very useful.’
