A high-profile Australian has been charged with rape after his alleged victim recognized his face from a photo online.

The man, whose name cannot be identified for legal reasons, allegedly met the woman at the Powerhouse nightclub in Toowoomba, west of Brisbane, in October 2021.

They allegedly took a taxi back to their friend’s house and had sex once that night and twice in the morning.

However, as the Daily Mail Australia revealed over the weekend, the woman He claimed that the last two times they were not consented to because he did not use a condom.

Not using a condom without the partner’s permission is considered sexual assault under Queensland law.

Six weeks later, the woman was browsing the internet on her phone when she saw the man’s photo and recognized him. as the same person who allegedly had sex with her.

The woman reported the matter to the police the next day before making a formal statement. The man was charged with two counts of rape on January 10.

He cannot be named under a Queensland law that prohibits the identification of those accused of alleged sexual assault or rape offenses unless the case goes to trial.

It will be argued in court that the couple spoke on Snapchat for a few days after the encounter, but soon lost contact.

Police will claim they have CCTV footage of the club showing the couple leaving together, and evidence that the man booked a taxi.

At Toowoomba Magistrate Court on January 11, the man’s defense attorney, Rowan King, lobbied for certain conditions for the bail and handed over medical documents while requesting a continuance.

The police did not challenge his bail conditions, which included a no-contact order and the surrender of his passport.

Justice Kay Ryan ordered that a brief of evidence be served by February 15. The man will return to pretrial detention summons court on February 22.

Last year, the second Hear Her Voice report was delivered, highlighting the experiences of women and girls throughout the criminal justice system.

The report made 188 recommendations, including educational campaigns aimed at dispelling rape myths, among others.

One of the key recommendations was the ability to name people accused of sexual offenses in Queensland, bringing it in line with other states and jurisdictions.
