High On Life is back and bloodier, with new guns, new voices
Squanch games’ High in life made waves last year as “the biggest single-player game launch ever on Game Pass” according to Microsoft, so of course we’ll get more High in life. Called a new expansion High on the knife adds a new “fully realized” planetary environment and all-new characters, including two new weapons voiced by two funny people.
High on the knife will have a creepier, more blood-soaked bow than the original game, based on the brief teaser trailer Squanch showed off Tuesday during Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase Extended livestream. Knifey, the sentient knife voiced by Michael Cusack in High in lifewill seemingly get more screen time in the DLC, launching this fall.
High on the knife will feature a “hyper-violent new upgrade” for Knifey and “lots more weird, funny and surprising stuff,” Squanch Games chief creative officer Mikey Spano said in a press release.
Knifey is joined by two new weapons: Harper, “an ex-military gun trying to overcome her past,” voiced by Sarah Sherman (Saturday Night Live); and BALL, a pinball machine “operated by a chaotic bunch of little gibberish-talking lunatics”, voiced by Alec Robbins (Mr Boop). In High On Knife’s “horror-comedy vibe” setting, players will encounter a new evil in the form of boss Mux, voiced by Gabourey Sidibe (Wonderful, rich).
Missing from the original High in life, at least in the trailer for the DLC, is the voice of studio co-founder Justin Roiland, who left Squanch earlier this year after his arrest in a domestic violence dispute became known. The charges against Roiland were dropped in March.
Price and release date for High on the knife were not announced. Polygon has contacted the developer for more details, including whether High on the knife will be included with Game Pass and will be updated as the company responds.
High in life is available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Windows PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. The original game is included with Game Pass for Xbox and PC. Squanch Games says more than 7.5 million people have played High On Life since its December launch.
