Acclaimed indie filmmaker A24 has been announced as the partner studio for the film adaptation of Hideo Kojima's Death stranding video game.
In a press release and message on the Kojima Productions websitethe legendary games designer confirmed that the company behind some of the biggest hits of the 21st century had been chosen to co-develop the live-action feature film.
Kojima, whose credits include the hugely popular Metal gear solid franchise and viral demo sensation PTrevealed that A24 was selected for its “unique” vision and development of hit films that are “high quality and highly innovative”.
KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS and A24 are teaming up to adapt DEATH STRANDING into a live-action feature film!December 14, 2023
“I was drawn to their creations and they have even inspired my own work,” Kojima continued in a written statement. “Their innovative approach to storytelling is in line with what Kojima Productions has been doing for the past eight years. Now we're creating one Death stranding movie together.
“There are many 'game adaptation films' available, but what we are making is not just a direct translation of the game. The idea is that our audience will not only be fans of the games, but our film as well. anyone who loves cinema .We create one Death stranding a universe never seen before and only achievable through the medium of film, it will be born.”
Kojima's comments offer a fascinating insight into how his self-titled studio and A24 will expand the universe captured in Death stranding. In the original game, players control Sam Bridges (The living Dead's Norman Reedus), a courier tasked with delivering supplies across a fractured United States with the goal of reconnecting parts of humanity after a cataclysmic event, all the while evading mysterious and dangerous supernatural entities known simply as BTs.
But as Kojima teases: the coming one Death stranding film will be a new entry set in the wider world of the franchise, meaning it's unlikely we'll see most (if not all) of the characters that appeared in the PlayStation exclusive title.
Either way, A24 seems like a great fit for a movie as creative, bizarre, and over-the-top as the games in Kojima's back catalog.
With big hits including Midsummer, Heir apparent, The whale, Ex MachinaAnd Talk to me – the latter being one of the best-received new films of 2023 – across its portfolio, A24 has taken the entertainment world by storm since its founding in 2011. The independent studio even won its first Oscar for Best Picture in early 2023, with the mind-boggling multiverse film Everything everywhere at once – one of Ny Breaking's best films of 2022 – including seeing other big hitters Avatar: The Way of Water, ElvisAnd Top gun Maverick to win the coveted prize.
No release date has been announced yet and it probably won't for several years as we're not sure how far along the development of the project is. Still, as big fans of A24 and Kojima here at Ny Breaking, we're excited to see what the two powerhouse studios can come up with.
It was a big week for A24 in terms of entertainment. On Friday, December 8, it was announced that more than 100 A24 films would be heading to Max, after the company struck a multi-year deal with HBO to bring its film library exclusively to one of the world's top streaming services (at least in the US ). . Many of A24's upcoming releases including Priscilla, The zone of interest, The Iron ClawAnd Civil war will also land on the platform following their theatrical runs.
