The incredible hidden detail in the Commonwealth Bank logo: “Every Australian should know about this”
- Commonwealth bank logo concealing an Australian icon
- Five points of the mirror of greater section Cross of the South
- Designed in 1991 to modernize the then ‘out of touch’ bank
One of Australia’s most iconic logos hides two surprising details.
The Commonwealth Bank gold diamond, which was first introduced in 1991, is based on the formation of the Southern Cross constellation.
The diamond logo features prominently at Commonwealth Bank locations across Australia.
Each corner represents one of the five stars, with the black wedge completing the diamond shape.
“The designer made the dark yellow part resemble the Southern Cross constellation, and a small black corner gave the figure a diamond shape,” said a logo expert at world of logos explained.
Commonwealth Bank says there is another detail in the logo that Australians often miss.
The two letters m merge to form one that few people tend to notice at first glance.
Australians were shocked after making the discovery.

‘I just found out that the Commonwealth Bank logo is a black and yellow representation of the Southern Cross constellation… IS THIS NEWS FOR ANYONE ELSE?’ one said.
“Fun fact I learned today: the Commonwealth Bank logo is supposed to be an abstract artwork by Southern Cross #whoknew,” another wrote.
“Everyone in Australia needs to know about this,” added a third.
The Southern Cross integration was made in 1991 after market research revealed that the bank was perceived as dated and outdated.
Introducing the new logo 32 years ago, the bank described it as bold, strong, modern and forward-thinking.
“The iconic diamond is so recognizable that Commonwealth Bank often uses it in advertisements without mentioning its name,” the logo expert said.
‘Commonwealth Bank spent a lot of money on the new logo because they felt that this identity element was strategically important in working with clients.’
