England midfielder Angel Gomes was sent off as Lille lost 2-0 to Sporting Lisbon in their opening Champions League match.
The 24-year-old former Manchester United star made his debut for the Three Lions last week in their 2-0 win over Finland.
He impressed with his calmness and diligence, with Ian Wright and Roy Keane among others praising him.
But Gomes’ memorable month was initially dealt a blow when he was shown a yellow card for pushing Sporting winger Francisco Trincao after 21 minutes.
Five minutes before half-time he was ordered to leave after bringing down Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres.

Gomes received his red card just a week after making his full England debut against Finland
Sporting created a number of dangerous chances in the first half, but goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier managed to stop them. In the 38th minute, Gyokeres opened the score after a beautiful pass from Pedro Goncalves.
In the second half, Debast fired a beautiful shot from a distance into the top right corner to give the home team the victory.
The Portuguese club is sixth in the table and will play its next match against Dutch side PSV Eindhoven on October 1. The competition will take place according to the new format, with the clubs playing eight matches in a league phase with 36 teams, instead of the previous group stage.
Meanwhile, Gomes’ contract with Lille expires this summer and there are rumours that he will not extend his stay at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium.
That could see a host of clubs vying for the star player, who is now in his fourth season as a regular at Lille after a spell on loan at Portuguese club Boavista.
According to The Sun, Newcastle could be locked in a battle with Liverpool, Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund for the signing of Gomes.
