Herston, Brisbane: Explosion heard on a quiet suburban street after a man turned off the device
A man has been filmed dropping a mysterious object on the side of a suburban street in the middle of the night, only to explode moments later.
Residents of Herston, in inner-city Brisbane, were woken by a loud bang just before 3am on Wednesday, while residents of nearby suburbs also reported hearing the strange noise.
CCTV footage from a house on Clyde Street showed a man driving his car slowly across the road before stopping.
He then got out of his car and placed a round black object on the nature strip, probably attached to a fuse.
Then he lit the fuse and quickly drove away.

Within minutes the fuse exploded, shocking residents of Herston and nearby suburbs including Windsor and Alderley. The explosion could be heard even seven miles away in Zillmere.
A woman living in Herston said the bang woke her up.
“I thought it might have been a small earthquake,” she said on Facebook.
“It was very loud and it seemed like the sound was reverberating, causing the windows in our bedroom to shake,” said another.

‘It was quite scary to wake up the animals in our home. At first I thought it was a car accident, but that’s not the case; it was a real explosion.’
Queensland Police said no injuries or damage were reported.
“Investigators are examining CCTV footage to determine the circumstances of the incident,” they said.
Investigators are appealing for anyone with sight or further information, especially relating to a vehicle seen leaving Clyde Street shortly before the incident, to contact police.
