A heroic officer in Mississippi was shot and killed during a traffic stop outside a Dollar General by a man with a criminal past spanning three decades.
George County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeremy Malone was killed outside a Dollar General on US Highway 98 near Lucedale on January 4 around 5:15 p.m.
The suspect, Ricky Powell, 43, shot Malone as he approached his vehicle before fleeing the scene. Police later chased Powell as he drove through Greene County into Perry County before shooting and killing the convict.
Malone was husband to his wife Hilary for 13 years and father of three daughters.
“He loved law enforcement, and he loved his wife and his girls. Our small county is devastated by the loss of Jeremy Malone. He will certainly be missed,” said Terry Rogers, a guard at a George County jail who also knew Malone for 15 years. WVUA.

An outpouring of support flooded social media as the small community mourned Malone’s sudden death.
George County Sheriff Mitchell Mixon said Malone was “larger than life” and focused his life on his family and his career.
Malone previously served with multiple law enforcement agencies in the state, including the Leakesville Police Department and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.
Beaumont Mayor Scotty Dailey, who graduated from Perry Central High School with Malone in 1988, told WDAM, “When we were on the playground playing cops and robbers, we knew Jeremy was going to be the cop because that was his whole life the ambition, to be a police officer. officer.’

“Mississippi will always remember Deputy Malone. Our state remains deeply grateful for all of our law enforcement officers who courageously put their lives on the line every day in defense of our communities,” Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves said in an executive order.
a GoFundMe page was created in honor of Officer Malone and aims to raise money for his family. It raised more than $44,000 on Friday.
First responders across the state also contacted the Tunnels to Towers Foundation to help Malone’s family after his death. The foundation, which aims to “help America’s heroes by providing mortgage-free homes” to the families of fallen first responders.
On Monday, the foundation announced that it had paid off Malone’s home, which the family had just purchased WXXV.

Funeral services for Malone will be held Friday, followed by a procession. Burial will follow in Tanners Cemetery in Halston.
“I think this incident reflects who Jeremy Malone really is. He was the most selfless, kind-hearted man I have met in law enforcement,” Brandon Walley, an officer who worked alongside Malone, said in a Facebook post.
“It was truly an honor to share that moment with him and I know the George County Sheriffs Office will never be the same without him asking me every weekend where we are going to settle.”

According to Fox 10, Powell has a criminal history dating back to the 1990s.
He was arrested in 1998 at the age of 18 in Mobile County, Alabama, and charged with burglary. He pleaded guilty and received a five-year prison sentence. All but seven months were suspended.
He was arrested in 2007 in the same county on charges of marijuana possession. Powell never showed up for court and the case was later moved to an administrative docket.
Powell was also indicted in Mississippi and served time for auto burglary and forgery. It is unclear how long he served and when exactly he was arrested on these charges.
