A Southern California police officer considered the hero of one of the nation’s deadliest mass shootings was killed in a motorcycle accident.

Manhattan Beach Police Officer Chad Swanson, 35, crashed a car on Interstate 405 at 5 a.m. Oct. 4, according to the California Highway Patrol. He died in hospital.

CHP Officer Steve Carapia believes the car that struck Swanson’s police motorcycle was first struck by another vehicle that likely “unsafely changed lanes,” causing a chain reaction.

Investigators are investigating whether a fourth vehicle may have been involved in the crash.

Another person was also taken to hospital with injuries. Their condition is not yet known.
