Here’s a little glimpse into the Firewatch sequel you may never get to play

Matthew Wilde, visual effects developer at Valve, recently shared this a quick look of the Campo Santo game In the Valley of the Godsdevelopment of which was suspended in 2019.

The six-second clip features a first-person perspective of the archaeologist-like figure shown in the game’s only trailer as she and the player character move through a dark, water-filled cavern toward a sunlit exit.

You may remember Wilde’s name from his work Half-life: Alyxespecially the amazing shaders he created to simulate realistic liquids in the virtual reality game’s many, many glass bottles.

“I often tend to work on liquid things – this was the water test we did at Campo Santo before the Valve move,” Wilde explained alongside the new In the Valley of the Gods film material.

In the Valley of the Gods was intended as Campo Santo’s sequel to Critical Darling Fireguard. It was first revealed at The Game Awards in 2017 with a 2019 release date. The following year, the studio was acquired by Valve and its staff integrated into projects such as Half-life: Alyx And Dota underlordswork that Campo Santo co-founder Jake Rodkin proposed should be banned from developing In the Valley of the Gods. The game Steam page now lists a release date of December 2029.
