Here are the 4 skirt styles that are on trend for 2025 – and the ones to ditch if you don’t want to look outdated

Skirts have long been a staple of most wardrobes. They are easy to style, flatter your figure and look chic with minimal effort. However, skirts are often seen as more of a summer piece and are sent to the back of our wardrobe once the weather cools. But it looks like that could change this winter.

Don’t believe us? Supermarket label Tue has reported a huge rise in popularity in recent weeks, with a 258% increase in skirt sales compared to this time last year.

With the new year just around the corner, this is a great opportunity to update your wardrobe and try some new styles. Below, we’ve rounded up the must-try skirt trends, as spotted on the SS25 catwalks, alongside the style choices to avoid to keep your look feeling modern and fashionable.

Kilts

Highland fashion has been big news for the fashion world since Dior championed Scottish craftsmanship, with its Cruise 2025 show full of tartan kilts, argyle prints and Tam O’Shanter hats held at Drummond Castle, Perthshire, last year.

Since then, the classic kilt – in different lengths and different tartan checks – has been spotted all over the high street and on stylish celebrities such as Dua Lipa, Madonna and model Amelia Hamlin.

Chopova Lowenas minis with carabiner details will give you maximum style points with fashion insiders, but if you’re looking for something more traditional, Le Kilt designs are at the top of our wish list.

We recommend that you support the trend with a soft gray maxi design, which you can combine with a thin knit cardigan and chunky boots.

Prevent: While we love this trend, there are a few things to consider before purchasing a new kilt. Firstly, avoid anything too preppy as this can quickly look dated. Think of Caitríona Balfe Foreignerinstead of Alicia Silverstone in it No idea when you need inspiration. Likewise, the trend feels chic and modern when worn in neutral shades of gray, navy blue and dark green. Bright yellows and reds can feel a bit kitsch and are not easy to style.

Column skirts

From baguette bags to mom jeans, the ’90s have inspired some of the biggest fashion trends in recent seasons. We thought we had tried them all, but we were wrong. The latest ’90s-inspired trend to see a resurgence is the office-appropriate column skirt.

Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s minimalist wardrobe is the inspiration behind this trend. With its columnar silhouette and slit at the back, it’s a flattering style that looks as great for a day at the office as it does for a date night.

The style was all over the SS25 catwalks, but our favorites were spotted at Moschino and Max Mara. Be inspired by these Italian brands and choose styles in chic navy blue or black, then combine them with sleek knits or a loose white shirt.

Prevent: Length is the key to perfecting this trend and maxi is the goal! Stay away from styles that hit higher than the ankle/low calf or you’ll end up looking like you were inspired by the office looks from an episode of Rivals.

Additionally, while pinstripes are back this season, they can make a column skirt feel too formal and old-fashioned, so play it safe by sticking to block color designs.

Slip skirts

Satin slip skirts are another trend we stole from the ’90s. They’ve been on our radar for a while, but thanks to the low-key luxury trend, they’ve recently taken on a grown-up twist that has us reaching for them again this season.

The key to creating a calm, luxurious look is to keep the color schemes subdued, so nothing too bright or flashy. Again, like column skirts, the underskirt looks best when it falls around the ankle. Now that winter is here to stay for a while, we’re wearing this trend with long boots (just make sure there are no gaps between the top of your boots and the hem of your skirt!)

Prevent: A satin underskirt can quickly look dated and therefore needs careful styling. While pairing it with white sneakers may seem like a safe option, it doesn’t look very modern, so stick to chunky boots, or even Mary Janes if you prefer something more delicate. Avoid floral or printed designs at all costs if you want your outfit to feel expensive. An easy way to complete your look is a chunky knit, worn with a loose French pleat.

Bubble skirt

From Kylie Jenner to Hailey Bieber, some of fashion’s biggest icons have been spotted in a bubble zoom recently. Similarly, styles were sent to the SS25 runways on the likes of Molly Goddard, Conner Ives and Tory Burch. Clearly they’ve got the seal of approval from the fashion set, so we expect the style to hit the high street everywhere in the coming months.

While wearing a bubble skirt may feel a little intimidating at first, they’re actually very easy to wear — as long as you pay attention to styling the right silhouettes elsewhere in your look. Keep a top or jacket cropped or boxy (making sure nothing stops lower than the waistband of your skirt). Also keep your shoes delicate with a pump or kitten heel, so nothing looks too bulky around your ankles!

Prevent:

The skirt with bubble hem is a lot more mature this time. Stick to chic, neutral colors and opt for mini or maxi silhouettes instead of midi styles. Scandi fashion influencers do it best, so take inspiration from them and pair with ballet flats and a pillow bag. Stay away from satin or silk designs because you don’t want to look like you’re going to an ’80s prom. Instead, choose light cotton.
