Herbert Coward – best known for his role as Toothless Man in the classic 1972 film Deliverance – died at the age of 74 in a car accident, along with a friend and his beloved pet Chihuahua and squirrel.

The actor attempted to drive onto US Route 23 Highway in Haywood County, North Carolina from a doctor’s office, but failed to yield the right of way when the vehicle was struck by an oncoming truck. FOX Carolina on Wednesday.

Their police sources say the driver, passenger and two pets died after the collision.

Inside Coward’s silver Nissan were his friend Bertha Brooks, his pet squirrel and Chihuahua, as all four died in the crash.

State Troopers explained in the release that the other driver involved in the crash was a 16-year-old who was later taken to the hospital for evaluation after the crash.

The law enforcement sources did not provide further details on their conditions.

The teen was not charged because troopers determined no crime had been committed.

As previously mentioned, Coward was best known for his role in the adventure film Deliverance, in which he played one of two sadistic mountain men and because he was missing front teeth, he became known as ‘Toothless Man’.

In perhaps the film’s most famous scene, his character and his fellow hillbilly sodomized a man in front of his friend who was tied to a tree in the woods.

Many of Coward’s lines from the film have become infamous in pop culture.
