Henry Cavill and Dua Lipa’s spy thriller Argylle gets a February 2024 release date from Apple Original Films and Universal Pictures

Fans eagerly awaiting world pop star Dua Lipa’s feature film debut in the spy thriller Argylle finally have a date to put on the calendar next year.

Apple Original Films – which acquired the rights to the film in August 2021 – has partnered with Universal Pictures for a theatrical release on February 2, 2024 via THR.

The film will compete against Warner Bros.’ mafia drama Wise Guys with Robert De Niro and Debra Messing and Lionsgate’s horror film Imaginary with Betty Buckley.

Apple released a first image featuring Henry Cavill and Dua Lipa in March 2022, though it’s unclear when the first trailer will appear.

The film marks just the latest high-profile feature film project for which Apple is collaborating with a theatrical distributor.

Apple is also teaming up with Sony for director Ridley Scott’s historical biopic Napoleon starring Joaquin Phoenix, due out November 22.

The streaming service also teamed up with Paramount for Martin Scorsese’s highly anticipated Killers of the Flower Moon, in theaters Oct. 6.

This marked a major shift from most streaming services, which until this year had rarely given their movies a theatrical release date unless they had an exclusive theatrical window.

The windows typically last between 30 and 45 days, which is what Amazon used for their feature film Air before debuting on their Prime Video streaming service.

The film is described as follows, ‘the greatest spy in the world, Argylle’, who ‘gets caught up in a world travel adventure’.

The film was first announced in June 2021, with Matthew Vaughn directing from a script by Jason Fuchs, an adaptation of an upcoming novel by mystery writer Elly Conway.

The writer has seemingly not published a book before, with the publication of the Argylle novel originally scheduled for September 29, 2022, then postponed to March 29, 2023, and now apparently scheduled for November 9, 2023.

Apple announced in August 2021 that they had acquired the rights to the film for a whopping $200 million, with Vaughn expressing his views on the unpublished manuscript in the announcement.

“When I read this early draft manuscript, I felt it was the most incredible and original espionage franchise since Ian Fleming’s 1950s books,” said Vaughan.

The director added, “This is going to reinvent the espionage genre,” though very little is known about the actual author.

The cast also includes Samuel L. Jackson, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, John Cena, Sam Rockwell, Catherine O’Hara, Ariana DeBose and Rob Delaney.

Little is known about Dua Lipa’s character, but she will make her first appearance in the highly anticipated Barbie movie in an unknown role, which hits theaters July 21.
