Hello Kitty creators reveal she’s not actually a cat – 50 years after the cult character was created

According to its creators, Hello Kitty (hold on to your hats) isn’t a cat at all.

The iconic character, created by Japanese company Sanrio, is celebrating her 50th anniversary this year, and with it comes some shocking revelations that may leave you confused.

She is one of the most beloved cartoon characters in the world, with an annual revenue of approximately 5 billion dollars. But it turns out that Hello Kitty is not even her real name.

“She’s actually a little girl who was born and raised in the suburbs of London,” said Jill Cook, Sanrio’s director of retail business development. NBC Today.

Her real name is actually Kitty White and despite her whiskers and cat-shaped ears, she is a human child.

Ms Cook said: ‘Her core message is friendship, kindness and inclusivity. One of the things that has helped her transcend borders, languages ​​and cultures is that it is understandable to everyone.’

Kitty has her own cat, Charmmy Kitty, a boyfriend, Dear Daniel, and ‘hundreds’ of friends.

Her hobbies are traveling and baking. When she grows up, she hopes to be a pianist or a poet, while Daniel wants to be a cameraman.

Christine R. Yano, author of Pink Globalization: Hello Kitty’s Trek Across the Pacific, previously confirmed that Hello Kitty is not a cat: “A lot of people don’t know the story, and a lot of people don’t care.”

According to Sanrio’s official website, Hello Kitty’s parents are George and Mary, she has blood type A, and her zodiac sign is Scorpio.

But people on social media did not accept the news without a fight, with many refusing to believe that Hello Kitty is not a cat.

A bewildered TikTok user @speechprof said: ‘Is Hello Kitty trying to gaslight us? She has whiskers and cat ears. She’s a cat. Am I in a fever dream?’

Others said: ‘Her name is Hello Kitty? As in a cat!’;

‘As a 30-year-old man who has never thought about Hello Kitty before, I didn’t think “Hello Kitty is 100% a cat” would be the answer I would die for. But still.’;

One person even compared it to ‘when the GIF creator said it was pronounced JIFF.’

However, her creators have pointed out that, unlike a real cat, Hello Kitty never walks on all fours.

The cat-shaped character was created in 1974 and first appeared on a wallet the following year.

The childhood icon has her own TV show and even an amusement park in Tokyo, while a live-action film was announced in 2019.

She is beloved by celebrities and was even congratulated by King Charles last month during the Japanese royal family’s state visit to the UK.

Even Kim Kardashian threw a Hello Kitty-themed party for her daughter Chicago’s birthday, with Drake wearing a headband featuring the character.
