Two people have died after a stolen motorcycle they were riding collided with a power pole at high speed while trying to evade police.
A 36-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman both died when the bike crashed at around 1:30 a.m. Saturday at the corner of Helensvale Road and Siganto Drive on the north side of Queensland’s Gold Coast.
Queensland Police say they saw the motorcycle driving on Discovery Drive and the motorcycle sped off when officers activated their lights and siren.
Acting Superintendent Rhys Wildman said officers “backed off” and stopped intercepting the motorcycle reported stolen in October this year.

“Shortly after police encountered a motorcycle that had crashed into a pole near the intersection of Siganto Drive in Helensvale and sadly a 36-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman were found dead at the scene,” acting Chief Supt Wildman said.
“We’ve had a few sightings related to that motorcycle recently, but we had no reason to intercept the motorcycle sooner.
“The number plates attached to the motorcycle did not match the motorcycle itself.”
The vehicle was stolen on October 11 from an address on Brisbane Road in Biggera Waters.
Supt Wildman said another vehicle may have been involved in the crash and police spoke to the 50-year-old driver of a ute.
The Forensic Crash Unit is on scene to investigate the incident, which is overseen by the Ethical Standards Command.
Following the accident, police closed Helensvale Road westbound from Discovery Drive and eastbound lanes on Siganto Drive.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
