Heartwarming scenes as Barmy Army fans pay ‘touching’ musical tribute to Pat Cummins’ mother… after the Australian skipper flew home to be with her as she undergoes hospice care

English cricket fans have made a touching gesture to Australian captain Pat Cummins and his terminally ill mother.

The Barmy Army, the traveling support base for the English cricket team, is currently in New Zealand for the Test series between the two nations.

Meanwhile, Cummins returned home from the Test series against India to be with his ailing mother who is in hospice care.

“I have decided not to return to India at this time as my mother is ill and in hospice care. I feel like I’m better off being here with my family,’ she said.

‘I appreciate the overwhelming support I have received from Cricket Australia and my teammates. Thanks for your understanding.’

Cummins’ mother’s name is Maria and the Barmy Army trumpeter played the song Maria from West Side story during the test match between England and New Zealand.

Some of Maria’s song lyrics include: “The most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard, Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria, all the beautiful sounds in the world in one word.”

Cummins himself shared the video and thanked the English fans for their support.

‘This is amazing Nutty Army, thank you. Mom loved seeing this and she was so touched,” she posted.

The gesture captivated the hearts of cricket fans around the world, including an Indian fan who reminded the sporting public of the $50,000 donation the Australian captain made for Covid relief in India.

‘What a tribute from the true knight of the Barmy army; prayers and respect for you Pat; you are a great athlete who embodies all that is good in humanity; who can forget his Covid gesture for the affected Indians’, they posted.

One English fan said the gesture reminded them that, at the end of the day, it’s just sport.

‘Proud to be English when I see this! Yes, we have jokes on the field, but when the enemy is having a hard time personally, the crazy army supports the player through him, ”he posted.

Unfortunately, many Australian fans have been far from supportive of Cummins and most of the comments are not suitable for publication.

“More respect for him than most Australians show,” posted one English cricket fan.

‘Amazing. It’s a shame it’s not getting the same support from a large part of the Australian public,” added another.

“Totally agree with you.. It’s disgusting what is said,” replied another fan.

The horrifying messages from Australian fans were criticized by broadcaster Glenn Mitchell.

“Twitter can be a cesspool. I cannot believe some of the comments being made about Pat Cummins’ decision to stay home to support his mother who is in hospice care,” he said.

‘For those who do, turn a mirror on yourself and ask yourself what you would do in a similar situation. And then shut up.
