Heartstopper’s Kit Connor says he felt ‘forced’ to publicly reveal he’s bisexual

Kit Connor, an actor on the Netflix hit Heartstopper, gained support from fans after he publicly revealed on Monday that he was bisexual and said he was “forced” to do so.
Connor (18) tweeted Monday: “Just back. i’m bi. Congratulations for forcing an 18-year-old to challenge herself. I think some of you missed the point of the show. Bye.’
It wasn’t immediately clear why Connor made the statement publicly, though there has been some speculation recently when he was pictured holding hands with actress Maia Refico, with whom he stars in A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow.

The actor received a number of supportive messages on Tuesday following his statement on Twitter.
Among those who responded to Connor’s tweet was Alice Oseman, creator of Heartstopper, who said: “I really don’t understand how people can watch Heartstopper and then happily spend their time speculating about sexuality and judging based on stereotypes. I hope all those people are ashamed of being F***. Kit, you’re great.’
One user wrote to Connor: ‘You know you didn’t have to do that right? we love you so much,” while another said, “feel for you Kit, I’m sending you all the love I have for you.”

Oseman previously spoke with Variety about the impression he hopes the show makes on viewers.

Connor spoke to the . last May Reign with Josh Smith podcast about how he felt uneasy about the sexuality speculations of him and his castmates.
“We’re all so young,” he said. “To speculate a little about our sexuality and maybe pressure us to get out when we might not be ready yet. For me, I just feel completely confident and comfortable with my sexuality.
“But I don’t feel the need to really, you know — I’m not big on labels and stuff like that. I’m not massively into that.
He added: “I don’t feel like I have to label myself, especially in public. It feels a bit strange to make assumptions about someone’s sexuality just based on hearing their voice or seeing their appearance. I think that’s a very interesting, somewhat problematic assumption to make.’
