The Heartbreak High reboot on Netflix has exceeded expectations by becoming one of the streaming platform’s most-watched programs worldwide.

The Australian teen drama came out on September 14, and viewers around the world – including those unfamiliar with the 1990s TV series it is based on – are hooked on the show.

It was the sixth most watched English-language program in the world in mid-September and the second most watched in Australia.

The series is most popular in Australia, Great Britain, America and parts of Africa.

The reboot has racked up over 18 million hours of viewing in just two weeks.

Its rapid success silences those who criticized the show early for making it seem “too awake” by the diverse cast.

While the cast includes racially mixed, non-binary, and even autistic characters, the strong storylines and sharp writing mean it’s far from just a diversity show.

The original Heartbreak High was a popular 1990s teen drama set in the fictional Hartley High, with plots addressing racism, human rights, and other real-life issues.

Netflix announced earlier this year that it is reviving the show for a new generation.

The reboot had been criticized in some quarters as a “wakeful” update to the 90s high school drama that made Callan Mulvey and Ada Nicodemou household names.

Que Minh Luu, Netflix’s Director of Content in Australia and New Zealand, said at the time, “It has long been a dream to make Heartbreak High for the current generation of Australians.”

Original Heartbreak High star Salvatore Coco has given the show his endorsement.

‘I thought it was fantastic. There were concerns that it would be too “awake”. But no, it touched the subjects and wasn’t in your face,” he said on the TV Blackbox Podcast.
