It was heartbreak for England when the Lionesses succumbed to a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Women’s World Cup final.
Spain scored a goal in the 29th minute after Olga Carmona Garcia fired from a tight angle on the left side of the box past goalkeeper Mary Earps with a left.
It was the only goal of the game and the Lionesses couldn’t quite find the equalizer despite several chances in the game, most notably hitting the woodwork on several occasions.
At full-time, Sarina Wiegman’s team sank to the ground heartbroken after the defeat.
Earps, who was sensational throughout the game and tournament, fell to her haunches and was then comforted by her teammates as she welled up on the field.
The Manchester United goalkeeper was awarded the Golden Glove after her brilliance at the tournament, and it was well deserved, with the No. 1 making several incredible saves throughout the game and also stopping a penalty.
Wiegman gathered her team into a group in the middle of the field and held a team talk with her players, with several members of the group appearing to come up.
The winners of the 2022 European Championship have been fantastic throughout and have made tournament history by playing in their first ever World Cup final.
As Spain rode off in celebration, the Lionesses gathered around each other with Keira Walsh notably comforting a dejected Alex Greenwood who had a bandage wrapped around her head after sustaining a head injury during the match.
Captain Millie Bright, who was also a standout at the tournament, also put her arm around a devastated Lucy Bronze before comforting other players on her team.
The Chelsea defender also showed her class by congratulating several Spanish players on their win.
England had chances throughout the game, with Alessia Russo driving through Spain’s penalty area early on but unable to get a shot away.
Soon after, Lauren Hemp would hit the crossbar, crashing into the woodwork in a long-range effort.
Just before half-time, Ella Toone missed a golden opportunity to level the Lionesses, but just couldn’t quite get the hang of a fiery ball across Spain’s penalty area by Hemp.
At half-time, Sarina Wiegman opted to make two changes, bringing in Chloe Kelly and Lauren James, making her first appearance since being sent off for a punch during their 1-0 win against Nigeria.
Earps was called up to make several saves during the match, and after a second half VAR assessment ruled that Keira Walsh had handled the ball in the penalty area, Spain had the opportunity to lead 2–0.
Jennifer Hermoso stepped up to take the penalty but her shot into the bottom right corner of the goal was saved by the England goalkeeper.
She stood out throughout the game and although Wiegman’s team had several chances in the second term, they unfortunately could not find an equalizer.
The Dutch manager gathered her players in a group in the middle of the field after the game and held a team talk with them, with the players around her welling up and in tears over the loss.
