Supreme Court Justice Abhay Oka on Saturday said urban development should not only be about high-rise buildings, huge flyovers and roads, but also about parameters like affordable medical facilities and educational institutions.
Justice Oka said it is time to decide what the development parameters of any city are.
Speaking at the launch of a book titled ‘Thane- The Eternal City’ written by Joe Alavares, the SC judge said the city of Thane has a rich heritage and history.
However, he said the city’s lakes and industries have disappeared over time.
Appreciating the lecture series started by Thane Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar, he said it will help educate citizens on topics like customs and traditions, besides history.
Speaking on the occasion, Indian Council of Cultural Relations Chairman Vinay Sahasrabuddhe said a day designated for Thane city should be celebrated in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of celebrating the foundation day of cities.
The coffee table launched at the event contains in-depth details about the history of Thane, its trade, activities and heritage.
Others who attended the event were city chief Bangar and Vijay Bedekar of the Institute of Oriental Study.
