HBOs Harry Potter TV remake has found its showrunner and lead director in Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod.
Confirmed in a press release from HBO today (June 26), Gardiner and Mylod were announced as the main creative duo of the upcoming TV reboot. Gardiner has been installed as head writer and one of the Harry Potter series’ many executive producers. Mylod is also part of the executive production team, with the filmmaker also appearing to be the director of several episodes of the likely first season.

Mylod is perhaps the best known of the duo. The director’s extensive work in the entertainment industry, and especially in HBO TV shows, means he is an ideal veteran head to helm the series from a filmmaking perspective. Mylod has directed episodes of hit shows, including The last of us, SuccessionAnd Game of Thrones, all of which are available to stream on Max in the US and are considered some of the best Max shows ever made. They can also be seen in the UK and Australia on Sky Atlantic/Now TV and Foxtel/Binge.
Gardiner has since written numerous scripts for a range of highly rated series, such as the HBO adaptation of Are dark materials and Prime Videos The man in the high castle. Like Mylod, Gardiner also worked on the multi-award winning Succession; the screenwriter fully deployed her production capabilities to oversee 17 episodes over the four seasons.
The couple’s confirmed engagement comes less than 24 hours after Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) confirmed this Harry Potter‘s TV remake has been relabeled as HBO Original, meaning it no longer falls under the Max TV Original banner. However, it will still launch on both platforms when the TV adaptation of Wizarding World of Harry Potter is ready for release.
Few other details have been revealed about the TV reboot of the world-famous fantasy franchise since its original announcement in April 2023. But WBD claims it will be “a faithful adaptation of the beloved series.” Harry Potter book series by author and executive producer JK Rowling. The series will feature a new cast leading a new generation of fandom, full of fantastic details and beloved characters Harry Potter fans have loved it for over twenty-five years.
