Have you lost your can opener? Here’s how to open a can using just a SPOON
- A clever kitchen hack lets you open a can with just a spoon
Nothing tastes better than a can of beans on toast…
But as the warming anticipation of the tomato sauce builds on your tongue, your hopes turn to despair when you realize your trusty can opener is missing from the kitchen drawer.
Your stomach growls and your suspicion grows – where do you go in times like this?
Not very far it seems, as can be seen from vlogger DaveHax who revealed how to open a can with nothing more than a simple spoon.
A YouTuber shared a simple hack to open a can without a special opener
The trick involves using a spoon to poke around the edge of the lid
Cans are designed to be incredibly sturdy to make the food airtight inside, keeping it fresh for months or even years
The YouTuber showed viewers how to pierce the metal by firmly grasping a regular dessert spoon and pushing hard to create a groove on one side of the lid.
Then he cut a circle around the edge of the lid with the edge of the spoon.
But he warns viewers that opening a can with a spoon can leave sharp edges.
“Obviously when you open a can like that you get a very sharp and jagged edge, so you have to be very careful.”
He adds that people should consider wearing safety gloves just in case.
Several users commented on how effective the hack was: ‘Unbelievable, this hack actually works. I was camping with four friends and we had some canned food for dinner, but no can opener.
But the neat detour leaves the edges of the lid sharp and jagged, so be careful
‘I told them I was going to open the cans with a spoon, and I succeeded incredibly.
‘Cue four very impressed and grateful friends, who otherwise would not have had anything to eat. It takes quite a bit of effort, but hunger is a great motivator!’
“Maybe I’ll start crying. You saved my night. Stupid day at work and forgot my can opener broke, wrote another.
“Most of what I want to make meatball sandwiches comes in a can (mix of sauce and tomato-paprika cubes).
“I had resigned myself to lousy TV dinners after being excited to eat these sandwiches all day.
Another user said the hack was made to look simpler than in the video, but still helped with their lunch.
They commented, “This totally saved my lunch at work today! Lol Not ALMOST as easy as the video makes it seem but I WAS finally able to get enough of the lid off with the spoon to eat my ravioli. Thank you!
