Has the ghostly ‘lost boy’ of York been caught on CCTV? Moment riderless bike rolls across street before falling over in Europe’s most haunted city

This is the disturbing moment a bicycle appears to ride itself before stopping and crashing into an empty York street.

The grisly incident was caught on CCTV as locals try to explain the spooky mystery in Europe’s most haunted city.

The scene took place near the historic city’s world-famous Shambles.

And one ghost expert even suggested it could be the work of York’s ‘lost boy’ – who has been spotted in the area before and is known for being shocked when passers-by see him.

The Shambles Market posted the video on social media, saying: ‘Yesterday something very strange was spotted on CCTV… and this clip gives us chills.

“Theories welcome… Has anyone else noticed any strange paranormal activity in the city?”

The adult’s racing bike can be clearly seen rolling itself out of a side road and remaining stable while balancing itself after wobbling on the cobblestones.

He then reaches the sidewalk and stands there for a good two seconds before steadily falling onto his side.

Mark Graham, who leads the Original Ghost Walk of York, said: ‘There are quite a few stories going around in the Shambles area: doors opening and closing in a different time, houses disappearing.

‘I will never forget that bike. York is a whole pastiche of strange events – a tapestry of unusual events.

‘One of the stories is about a boy who appears and disappears. He seems shocked to see you and you’re shocked to see him.

“And he haunts five or six places in the city in the same way, as if he has entered our world or we have entered his.

‘His name is the Lost Boy, he is a mystery. I don’t know if he cycles!’

Haunted: York has a dark and bloody history, with 500 haunted places within the city walls

York has a dark and bloody history – with more than 500 haunted places within the old city walls making it the most haunted city in Europe by the International Ghost Research Foundation.

Founded in 71AD by the Romans before being invaded by the Vikings, a key location in the Norman Conquest and the English Civil War, ghostly sights are a common sight in Britain’s ancient northern capital.

But Mackenzie Crompton, who runs the Shadows of York ghost tours, said she would be “over the moon” if it was true.

She said, “I think if you could get it from a different angle and there’s absolutely no one on the other side pushing it, that’s 99 percent right. There are no slopes on that small stretch.

‘It would be incredible. I would be over the moon if I saw that.

‘Just because of the location where it is located, I am somewhat skeptical, because there are a lot of young people hanging around there.

“But if I saw the camera angle from the other side and there was no one there, I’d say, ‘Yes, that’s definitely paranormal.’

Clare Bryant of the ghost hunting team Paranormal Research York was more skeptical about the incident.

She explained, “It’s a tricky one. The fact that you cannot see where the bicycle comes from does not rule out the possibility that it is a joke.

‘With the paranormal you can’t say something is 100 percent paranormal. So we wouldn’t want to say it’s paranormal, and we wouldn’t want to say it isn’t because we don’t have enough evidence.

‘The whole of York – around every corner, every alley, ginnel, snicket – there’s something there. There is always something happening, something we cannot explain, whether we see something or whether it is a sound.

‘We know York is haunted and given the history of York – the Romans, the Vikings, the Anglo-Saxons – it’s been built on all those layers over time.

‘We believe The Shambles is active. Sightings have been reported in many buildings down there.
