In recent years, Harry Potter author JK Rowling (pictured in 2022) has been embroiled in a series of online rows over her controversial views on the transgender community.
The actor, 34, said he has had no direct contact with Rowling since the controversy first broke out when he voiced his support for the LGBTQ+ community.
He told The Atlantic Ocean: ‘Jo, without her Harry Potter obviously wouldn’t have happened, so without that person probably nothing in my life would have happened the way it has. But that doesn’t mean you owe the things you really believe to someone else for the rest of your life.”
“It ultimately makes me very sad, because I look at the person I met, the times we met, and the books she wrote, and the world she created, and all of that is so deeply empathetic to me. ,’ he continued.
“I will continue to support the rights of all LGBTQ people and have no further comment.”
Earlier this month, Daniel Radcliffe (pictured in Harry Potter) commented on the controversy, saying his beliefs don’t have to align with the author’s just because she made him a star.
The 34-year-old actor (pictured in October) said he has had no direct contact with Rowling since the controversy first broke out when he voiced his support for the LGBTQ+ community.
Daniel and fellow Harry Potter stars Emma Watson, 34, and Rupert Grint, 35, have all been outspoken in their support of the transgender community in light of Rowling’s comments.
Rowling has been regularly attacked for saying in a series of online posts that trans women should not be allowed in women’s spaces.
Her feud with Daniel began after she commented on an article that used the phrase “people who menstruate” instead of women, writing, “I’m sure there used to be a word for those people.” Someone help me. Wumbing? Wimpond? Woomud?’
Shortly afterwards, Daniel wrote an impassioned article for an LGBTQ+ suicide prevention charity, saying ‘transgender women are women’.
Rowling has previously insisted she will not forgive stars who spoke out against her, including Daniel and his Harry Potter co-stars.
