Australian boxer Harry Garside has revealed he has found love again after his heartbreak at the Paris Olympics.

The 27-year-old boxer made an inspiring comeback to the ring after being cleared of domestic abuse allegations against his former partner Ash Ruscoe.

However, he failed to progress beyond the first round in Paris. He later told Nine that he felt like a “failure” after training for 20 years and falling at the first hurdle.

While reflecting on his sporting career with Nova 96.9, Garside revealed that he has a new romance.

“I had this strange ambition to walk with giants and I think in that 20-year journey I finally reached a destination where I believed I could do it,” Garside said.

“So, it’s a beautiful journey, a beautiful evolution. I think the biggest thing I’ve learned from it is that I set big, audacious goals … but on the journey, you ultimately feel like you can achieve them.”

Garside said his new relationship came at a time when he least expected it. He had vowed to focus entirely on winning the gold medal.

“During that process I actually fell in love
it happened so unexpectedly, and I think that’s the best kind of love
when you’re not looking for it, but it just comes into my life,” he said.

‘She’s originally from Sydney but currently lives in London so I’m really excited she’s coming back at the end of the year… she’s definitely worth the wait.’

Garside added that he was happy to have suffered a shock defeat at the age of 27, admitting that as a younger man he would have found it difficult to live with the result.

“If this happened five years ago, when I was younger, and my whole identity was just boxing… think about the decisions I made when I failed, and how bad I felt, and what I did in secret to hurt myself. It was pretty scary,” he said.

“But I guess I don’t know if it’s growth, or maturity, maybe a mix of everything, but this time it didn’t happen and I don’t know if I’m looking forward to it.”

When asked about his boxing future, Garside said: ‘I’m just trying to stay fit… The decisions I made when I failed were negative, and I’m just trying to do more positive things.

‘So I train every day. I keep fit. I want to do some triathlons in the summer. I love boxing, so I’ll always keep boxing, I’m not sure if I’ll go professional, next Olympics, I’m not sure if I’ll stop completely. But I’ve always enjoyed doing it, so I’ll keep doing it until I lose the love for it.’
