Nelson Mandela’s eldest granddaughter has criticized an Australian newspaper after she was quoted accusing Prince Harry and Meghan Markle of “profiting off” her family’s legacy to promote their Netflix documentary.
Ndileka Mandela made headlines earlier this month when she reportedly criticized the royal couple for having “stolen” her grandfather’s name for her own personal gain.
Sydney’s Daily Telegraph newspaper claimed the socialist activist was “deeply upset” that the Sussexes used quotes from the late South African president in their Live To Lead documentary series.
But Mrs Mandela angrily claimed the tabloid twisted her words and exploited her grandfather’s name to launch an attack on the royal couple.
In an opinion piece for the London newspaper the independent on Sunday, Mrs Mandela criticized the newspaper for ‘using my name as a weapon’.
She said her grandfather’s reputation had been used to attack a woman of color.
Ndileka Mandela (pictured) has denied claims she accused Prince Harry and Meghan Markle of “profiting” off her late grandfather’s name.
She insisted she never accused Harry and Meghan of “profiting” off their grandfather’s name and was “shocked” by the claims.
Critics (of Meghan and Harry)… falsely exploited my grandfather’s name to attack them.
‘The words that are wrongly attributed to me, criticizing you for quoting my grandfather, are not mine at all, they do not belong to me, but to those who have amplified these falsehoods throughout the world.
“I am mortified to have seen my words twisted in such a way as to distort my genuine concerns about the commercial exploitation of my grandfather’s legacy.”
Ms Mandela was quoted by The Daily Telegraph as saying she admired Prince Harry for having the confidence to part ways with The Firm, but was “deeply upset” that he and Meghan were using her grandfather’s legacy.
Nelson Mandela’s eldest granddaughter says she unequivocally supports Prince Harry and Meghan’s (pictured) position and the use of her grandfather’s name.
“I don’t think he or Meghan knew their grandfather well, maybe when Harry was young at Buckingham Palace, but they are using their quotes in the documentary to attract people and make millions without the Mandela family benefiting. Mandela said. quoted by the newspaper.
“I know the Nelson Mandela Foundation has supported the initiative, but people have been stealing Grandpa’s quotes for years and using his legacy because they know his name sells – Harry and Meghan are no different than them.”
“But it comes at a price, then you have to finance your own life. I’ve made my peace with people who use Grandpa’s name, but it’s still deeply annoying and tedious every time it happens.”
In response to quotes posted, Ms. Mandela, who insisted that he “honestly finds nothing wrong with them (the Sussexes) using that inspirational opening with a quote from Grandpa” and accused critics of the pair of “making a mountain out of a mole… for no reason.” . .
“Meghan has always been an activist, and this is in her advocacy work that my grandfather was, he was, a social justice activist through and through,” she told Fox News earlier this month.
Ndileka Mandela (left), pictured with her sister Nandi Mandela (right) and son Luvuyo Madasa in London last month, has accused an Australian newspaper of misquoting her.
“As I said at the beginning, a lot of people use Grandpa quotes, and no one has gotten such a big rah-rah like they’re doing with Harry and Meghan using this quote.”
Since then, Ms Mandela has claimed in her article for The Independent that her grandfather’s legacy was misused to attack Meghan, “a woman of color who was effectively kicked out of the British royal family.”
“I think it’s because despite our real victories against apartheid, colonialism and slavery, in a way, the mentality behind these crimes is alive and well in some of our most powerful institutions,” he wrote.
Ms. Mandela reiterated that she greatly admires the royal couple for their courage to stand up for the less privileged and celebrates the inspiration of her grandfather’s legacy.
He ended the article by insisting that he unequivocally supported the position of the royal couple and the use of his grandfather’s name.
