Hardware giant Bunnings surprises residents with a touching Christmas gesture – but they had to do one thing to earn it

Hardware chain Bunnings has surprised residents with some Christmas cheer, as long as they did one thing to earn the gesture.

A woman discovered a letter on her doorstep from her local Bunnings store in Gawler, South Australia, containing a $10 gift card.

The unexpected note thanked the South Australian resident for her beautiful Christmas light display.

'Hello neighbour! Wow! Your Christmas lights are amazing!' the letter said.

“We want to thank you for adding a little magic to our community this holiday season. Here's a little something to show our appreciation.

'I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Best wishes, The Bunnings Gawler team.'

The appreciation was mutual and the woman wrote about the act of kindness on Facebook on Wednesday.

“Look what I had at my door this morning. What a beautiful gesture,” the woman wrote.

She posted a photo of her dazzling Christmas light display, along with a photo of the note she received from the hardware giant.

When Bunnings employees see a Christmas display that appeals to them in their community, they can nominate the house to receive a gift.

And while it's not a requirement that individual stores participate, the gesture is something that can happen nationwide.

“Brightening someone's day with a small gesture like this is what our team does best and we hope it will bring a smile to those who have gone all out with their decorating this year,” said Ben Camrie, director of retail operations at Bunnings, to Daily Mail Australia.

'We know it's been a challenging year for many and we wanted to celebrate those spreading some joy in their neighborhood with a little surprise from their local Bunnings team.'

Unsurprisingly, the social media post attracted thousands of comments, with people loving the thoughtful surprise.

'Absolutely valuable! This is just beautiful. It's great to be appreciated,” one person wrote.

Others called the thank you note and voucher 'beautiful' and 'thoughtful'.

Some Bunnings customers said they had also unexpectedly received a voucher from the hardware store.

'We have one too. It was a very nice unexpected surprise,” wrote one.

“We have one too, but it cost twenty dollars,” another commented.
