Another year and all rural households in the country could achieve 100 percent coverage of piped water connections. At least that is the hope of the people behind the Jal Jeevan Mission’s Har Ghar Jal initiative.

The Jal Shakti Ministry’s data shows that the target is within reasonable reach with 73.57 percent of households already covered under this flagship program of the Narendra Modi government. However, a closer look at the numbers reveals the challenges, or what we might even call pain points.

Three states – Rajasthan, Jharkhand and West Bengal – are far below
