Happy Valley viewers claim Ryan’s football coach is ‘evil’ and can’t be trusted

Happy Valley viewers have claimed that Ryan’s school football coach, Mr. Hepworth, cannot be trusted after he told the student he could trust him with his problems.

In last week’s episode, Sergeant Catherine Cawood followed her 16-year-old grandson as he made his visit to see his father Tommy Lee Royce in prison, accompanied by his sister Claire Cartwright and her partner Neil Ackroyd.

But doubts are raised when Claire doesn’t go to prison, instead heading to a coffee shop in Sheffield and lying to Catherine about her whereabouts, only to be ambushed by her sister.

Eek! Happy Valley viewers have claimed that Ryan’s school football coach, Mr. Hepworth, cannot be trusted after he told the student that he could trust him with his problems.

During Sunday’s episode of the BBC drama, Mr. Hepworth (played by Mark Stanley) seemed surprised to learn that Ryan’s (Rhys Connah) father was in prison and told the teenager he could be trusted.

In a scene in a school hallway, he said: ‘Ryan, just to tell you that you played very well on Saturday. I’m glad we cleared things up. You made some very respectable saves… What’s up?

Ryan’s friend then chimed in: ‘Tell him, whatever he did, to apologize to his grandmother. He had a fight with his grandmother, so he went to live with his aunt Claire and she’s a little weird.

When Mr Hepworth asked what it was and the friend replied: “His dad”, the staff member replied: “I didn’t know you had one.”

The friend added, “He’s in prison,” before Hepworth told Ryan: “Do you want to talk to someone about it? It might help. It doesn’t have to be me or… it could be. Be good at talking.

When she followed up with the offer later, while telling Ryan about the troubled state of her own marriage, viewers shared their concerns on Twitter.

One wrote: ‘#HappyValley What is Mr. Hepworth doing?’ while another wrote: ‘That football manager is sketchy! #Happy Valley.’

A third and a fourth added: ‘You’re right about Hepworth. He is an enabler of evil. #HappyValley’ and ‘Noooo… Ryan please don’t talk to him… #HappyValley’.

Oh darling! When she followed up with the offer later, while she was telling Ryan about the troubled state of his own marriage, viewers shared his concerns on Twitter.

More chimed in with, ‘Oh my gosh, this teacher! Don’t trust him Ryan! #HappyValley’ and ‘Imagine a teacher talking to a student about the status of their #HappyValley marriage’.

Another concluded: ‘I’m 10 minutes late but the PE teacher is giving me really weird vibes… where is this going? #Happy Valley.’

Sarah Lancashire reprized her role as Catherine Cawood in the popular BBC crime drama when she returned to the screens on New Year’s Day after a seven-year hiatus.
