Hannah Waddingham reveals why she got into a row with Ted Lasso bosses while filming the comedy series
Hannah Waddingham has revealed how she fell out with Ted Lasso’s bosses while filming the comedy series.
The 50-year-old actress recalled how producers wanted her character Rebecca Welton to maintain her usual glamorous look even when waking up in bed with one of her players.
However, Hannah disagreed, resulting in a row with both the make-up department and the show’s bosses as she fought to keep her character ‘approachable’ to fans.
She refused to wear makeup for the scene, emphasizing that it had to look realistic to look sexier and prevent viewers from ‘switching off’.
Hannah said she initially argued about it with her make-up artist, who wanted to apply discreet, limited make-up, but the issue was eventually fought out with the show’s bosses.
Hannah Waddingham has revealed how she fell out with Ted Lasso’s bosses over her character Rebecca Welton
The 50-year-old actress recalled how producers wanted her character Rebecca Welton to maintain her usual glamorous look even when waking up in bed with one of her players.
The singer argued that Rebecca would look sexier if she looked like she had little sleep from a night with the young player than if her face looked perfect.
Speaking about the Table for two podcast, Hannah explained, “She doesn’t mind me saying it, but my hair and makeup artist on Ted Lasso, there’s a moment where I’m in bed with Toheeb’s character Sam Obisanya, and I’m like, ‘No, when they get wake up together. I don’t want to wear makeup.”
‘The make-up artist said, “Well no, no, no, it has to be, it has to be like the ‘make-up without make-up'”
‘And I thought, “No, I don’t want that, no, I don’t want one.” And it kind of went to those in power. They said, “Hannah doesn’t want to wear makeup.”
‘Because I want her to be approachable. I know everyone was rooting for Rebecca Welton and I take her very seriously.
“I thought I just wanted everyone to see her pores and everything, warts and all.
“And that’s how I like every character, because your vulnerability is so close to your greatest strength.”
Hannah said audiences would ‘switch off’ when they saw a character waking up in bed, still glamorous as the night before.

The actress added, “There’s something much sexier and exciting about the fact that she clearly had a great night.”
Regarding the season four rumors, Hannah said, “I don’t know. All I know is that Welton hasn’t left my heart anywhere.
‘I think there is a possibility. Who knows? All I know is that the writers’ room was a writers’ room of champions, great writers, and that spoils you with all the other work.
‘Because right now, and I’m actually very happy about that unless I get a script that pushes and pulls me as much as Ted does – I mean you could sit in one scene and almost touch people’s hearts with one sentence and then make them laugh, as if you were hitting them in the face with a gag.
‘And I’ve never known anything like it. The great thing about that writers’ room was that it was full of male feminists, and you see that everywhere in the lyrics.
‘Myself and Juno as the main characters never felt dominated by all our men. They were the best five years of my working life. Total and utterly infinite bliss.
Earlier this year, Hannah called a photographer on the Olivier Awards red carpet after she was asked to ‘show some leg’.
Video shared by a fan on X captures the moment the Ted Lasso star posed outside the Royal Albert Hall before a photographer apparently asked her to ‘show leg’.
The photographer’s comments are inaudible, but Hannah is seen shouting at the crowd of photographers, “Oh my God, you would never say that to a man, my friend.”

While fans cheer her on, she threatens to leave if the comments keep saying, “Don’t say ‘show me my leg.’ No.’
As she walked away, Hannah continued to argue with the snapper, pointing at him and adding, “Have some manners.”
Hannah hosted this year’s Olivier Awards, celebrating another fantastic year in British theatre.
She wowed in a custom Marchesa gown, adorned with sparkling embellishments on the semi-sheer dress for her red carpet moment before making three outfit changes during the glittering ceremony.
