A man has been found stabbed to death in a suburban street as police launch a desperate investigation to find the killer.

Officers were called after reports that an injured man was found on the side of the road at the corner of Little Avenue and Widdop Crescent, in Hampton East, southeast of Melbourne, about 12.30pm on Tuesday.

Emergency services desperately performed CPR on the 46-year-old, but he sadly died at the scene.

Detectives from the homicide unit also attended the incident where a crime scene was established.

Detectives and forensic investigators scoured the area, including a vacant real estate development site, looking for clues.

The exact details surrounding the incident have yet to be determined, but the investigation is ongoing.

Shocked neighbors said they had never experienced anything as confrontational as what they faced on Tuesday afternoon.

“Shocking, absolutely shocking, the world has gone crazy,” one resident told 9News.
