Hamburg goalkeeper’s derby howler dubbed the ‘greatest own goal EVER’ after he hurriedly smashes the ball into his own net during tense derby against St Pauli in Germany’s second tier

Hamburg goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes has been credited with scoring the 'greatest ever own goal' after hitting the ball into his own net during a derby match in the Bundesliga's second division.

Fernandes was at fault for the second goal in the derby that gave St.Pauli a two-goal lead in Friday's Bundesliga 2 match and social media was quick to make fun of the ridiculous moment.

When goalkeepers typically score own goals it is normally the result of an errant save or the ball bouncing off the woodwork and into the player, but Fernandes made no such mistake.

Poor defensive play from his side's centre-backs left Fernandes struggling to return to his goal line after a sloppy back pass.

The 31-year-old then fired the ball into his own net with a finish that Hamburg's attackers may have wished they could copy at the other end of the pitch.

The ball bounced across the surface of the Millerntor Stadium before being fired into his own net by the goalkeeper.

His attempt to clear the ball was thundered into the roof of the net, stunning fans and his own teammates alike.

Fernandes stared into space as realization dawned, but thankfully his side responded with two equalizing goals that salvaged a 2-2 draw for the visitors.

Meanwhile, social media erupted with talk about the scandalous moment that definitely has a chance of being the worst own goal ever.

One comment read: 'Possibly the greatest own goal I have ever seen, absolutely sensational work from HSV.'

Another added: 'No! This should be investigated. What the hell is this playing from the back?'

A third comment further ridiculed the goal, adding: 'The goalkeeper was helpless before the terrible shot.'
