Hamburg Airport suspends flights after ‘threat to attack plane’: Police attack Iranian plane

  • Officers descended on the plane carrying 198 passengers and 16 crew when it landed at 12.20pm

Flights have been suspended at Germany’s Hamburg airport this morning following a threat of an attack on a plane flying from the Iranian capital Tehran.

German police descended on the plane after it landed at the international airport in the north of the country and conducted a search, acting on an earlier email threat.

The plane landed in Hamburg at around 12.20pm with 198 passengers and 16 crew members undergoing a security check. The plane and the luggage on board were also checked.

The terminal stopped takeoffs and landings at 12:40 p.m. local time, a spokesman said.

Police said they were taking the threat seriously, but have yet to release further details.

The police operation comes on the first day of a special meeting of the German and French governments in Hamburg, attended by Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President Emmanuel Macron.

It also unfolded against a backdrop of rising international tensions after Israel came under sustained and brutal attack by Hamas gunmen over the weekend.

The incursions left hundreds of Israelis dead – including revelers at a festival. Israel responded with a wave of deadly airstrikes against the Gaza Strip.

More to come.
