Hamas says Israeli airstrike on Gaza school killed 30 and wounded more than 100 as IDF says terrorists were operating from there

  • This follows a military operation in which 170 people were killed, the civil protection agency said

The Health Ministry in Hamas-ruled Gaza said an Israeli attack on a school killed 30 people on Saturday, while a days-long military operation further south left about 170 dead, the civil protection agency said.

At least eight schools, including the last one, have been hit since July 6, killing more than 100 people, according to figures from the Ministry of Health and a hospital source.

Most of Gaza’s 2.4 million people have been displaced at least once during the war that began with Hamas militants’ Oct. 7 assault on southern Israel. Many have taken refuge in school buildings, including the one on Saturday.

The latest attack in the Deir el-Balah urban area targeted the Khadija school, the Health Ministry said.

More than 100 people were injured.

The Israeli military says it has carried out an attack on the school, targeting “terrorists” operating there.

Further south, in the Khan Yunis urban area, about 170 people were killed and “hundreds wounded” in an Israeli operation that lasted several days, the Gaza Civil Protection Agency reported.

The statement came after the army earlier on Saturday warned of new operations in the area and issued new evacuation orders for residents of Khan Yunis, where troops earlier recovered the bodies of five Israelis.

The airstrike comes nine months after the start of a war sparked by Hamas’ October attack on southern Israel, which killed 1,197 people, mostly civilians, according to Israeli figures.

The militants also captured 251 hostages, 116 of whom are still in Gaza. According to the Israeli military, 44 are dead.

More than 39,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in Israel’s military retaliation in Gaza, according to data from the Health Ministry in Hamas-ruled Gaza.
