Halle Bailey reveals her romance with DDG is the ‘first time’ she has ever been in ‘real love’ as she covers Cosmopolitan: ‘It’s just fireworks’

Halle Bailey has revealed that her romance with the rapper DDG is the ‘first time’ she’s ever really been in love.

“You know, you have puppy love experiences, you think that’s love,” she shared Cosmopolitan. “But this is my first deep, deep, real love.”

The 23-year-old singer, who this year starred in Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, covered Cosmopolitan’s latest song.

She exuded retro chic in a lime green miniskirt with a matching faux fur lined jacket, while showing off her dizzying legs in a pair of black leather thigh-high boots.

In the magazine, she spoke about her relationship with DDG, with whom she was first linked in early 2022.

‘All musical inspiration really just comes from life experiences. Love has been really important to me too, because that’s something I’m experiencing for the first time, and it’s like, ‘whoa’ in your head,” Halle said. “It’s just fireworks, a spark for creativity.”

After months of rumours, DDG confirmed their romance in March 2022 by posting a bubbly Instagram tribute to her for her birthday.

In August, Essence asked Halle if she was in love with DDG and the pop singer replied, “Yes.” I am for sure.’

At the end of last year, DDG appeared on The breakfast clubwhere he revealed that he was “eventually” open to the prospect of popping the question to Halle.

In her new interview, Halle also looked back on the increased public exposure she received with The Little Mermaid, which hit theaters in May.

She focused especially on how much it warmed her heart to see black girls react to the sight of her playing a black Ariel.

“Every time I see these videos, I cry. I mean, I love seeing the beautiful families come together and respond in that way,” she said. “I feel so happy, so embraced and so proud of it. And I’m so thankful they get to see themselves.’

In addition to the warmer responses, Halle has also gotten some trolling on social media, revealing to the magazine how she handles backlash online.

“I just live my life the way I want and turn off my phone if I don’t like what people say online,” she said. “But I also think what I’m going through now as a young woman is really good fuel for me creatively. That’s why I focus on turning the life experience I gain into the art I make.’

Halle, who gave the interview before the start of the SAG-AFTRA strike banning her from promoting her films, also spoke about her upcoming film The Color Purple.

The original novel by Alice Walker was made into a movie by Steven Spielberg in 1985 and then into a Broadway musical in 2005.

Now that musical is being made into a new movie, with a stellar cast including Fantasia, Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo and HER

Halle plays the role of the younger version of a character played by Ciara in the new film, which Spielberg is among the producers.

In her new Cosmopolitan interview, she shared her enthusiasm for the film’s “beautifully black-black” work environment.

“Set was like going to a cookout — it honestly felt like a family reunion, like being surrounded by your aunts and cousins,” she joked.

“I was just excited to be there as a fan of everyone. The film is a labor of love. I mean, we all care so much about the original story and really wanted to do a good job with this new performance. People will go crazy with the performances of Fantasia and Taraji. It gives me chills just thinking about it.’
