Haldwani violence: Govt writes to MHA, seeks additional paramilitary forces | India News – Business Standard
The Uttarakhand government on Saturday requisitioned four additional companies of central paramilitary forces to maintain law and order in Banbhulpura in Nainital where violence broke out a few days ago during an anti-invasion drive by the district administration.
In a letter written to the Union Home Minister on Saturday, Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Radha Raturi said: “In view of the attack action on February 8, 2024 at Malik ka Bagicha under Banbhulpura police station area of Haldwani town in Nainital district, there are continuous attempts being made by anarchist elements to influence law and order, hence there is a need for 04 companies of additional paramilitary forces.”
Five people were killed in the violence that broke out on Thursday following the anti-encroachment drive, following which a curfew was imposed in the area.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nainital PN Meena also said that three cases have been registered in which 19 people have been named.
As many as 5,000 unknown people have also been named in the cases, officials said.
Earlier, the Home Ministry rushed four companies of paramilitary troops to Haldwani in Nainital district after violence broke out in Banbhoolpura on Thursday.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited Haldwani on Friday afternoon and said the attack on police personnel, including women officers, was highly condemnable.
He also mentioned that some people have tried to spoil the atmosphere in ‘Dev Bhoomi’ and have taken the law into their own hands.
“The anti-infringement action has continued as per the directions of the court. Yesterday, when the government tried to destroy illegal properties, violence broke out and our police personnel, including women officers, were attacked and stones were pelted at them. The government had informed people in advance. This is highly condemnable,” CM Dhami said.
The CM also inquired about the status of the women police team and other personnel, administration, municipal corporation staff and journalists who were injured on the spot.
Earlier, CM Dhami also met State Governor Lieutenant General (Retd) Gurmit Singh on Friday and apprised him of the law and order situation in the State in the wake of the violent clashes in Banbhoolpura area of Haldwani.
