Hairy Bikers Go West viewers are in tears as BBC pays tribute to ‘the light, zesty and lovely’ Dave Myers in first episode to air since his death

The BBC paid tribute to Dave Myers on Tuesday night when the next episode of Hairy Bikers Go West aired, just days after the star’s death.

The BBC Two continuity announcer introduced the 7pm episode by saying: ‘To Wales in very good company, light, feisty and lovely Dave Myers, gone but not forgotten’.

The TV chef died last week at the age of 66 with his friends and family by his side, two years after revealing he was undergoing treatment for an unspecified form of cancer.

Viewers were left in tears as they watched Dave on screen with best friend Si King.

“OMG when I hear Dave’s voice opens this episode of Hairy Bikers Go West. I cut onions honestly,” one viewer tweeted.

“It doesn’t feel right that this series is the last we’ll see of Si and Dave. Dave’s passing has left a pretty big hole in the culinary TV world,” wrote another.

The final ‘magical series’ of The Hairy Bikers will air in full on the BBC producers revealed on Tuesday.

Dave filmed his final show last year, which had only just aired on BBC Two.

A post on his Instagram page confirmed on Tuesday that the next episode since his death would air nationwide tonight.

The message read: ‘Despite such sad times, we know Dave would have wanted you to continue enjoying the magical series he created with Si last year.

‘We would like to thank everyone from around the world who has sent messages of love and support over the past few days. They have all been read and really appreciated.’

The chef announced he was receiving treatment for cancer in May 2022 and bravely kept the public informed of his progress in a series of emotional TV specials.

He died last Wednesday with his family and friends by his side, colleague and lifelong friend Si revealed.

In one part of the episode, Si met with the owners of a permaculture farm alone while Dave rested during filming.

He told the farmers: ‘they have the B team, not the A team’, before continuing: ‘I really wish my best friend was here because he would absolutely love this. This is what we’re all about, it’s fantastic.

“And he’s a good grower, Dave. Dave and his wife are good growers.’

The Hairy Bikers have always been a double act, and Si admitted he found it strange traveling alone by bike.

“I especially didn’t enjoy riding alone, but I’m going to bring him back some produce and start nibbling on it. It’s strange without him.’

When Dave returned to visit a historic railway line in Portmadog, the star enjoyed a lifelong ambition to drive a steam train.

After watching his good friend go through the experience, Si said, “It was fun seeing my best friend drive a train. It was just lovely to see a smile on his face because he was having a bloody hard time.’

Dave added: “I missed this, last year Kingy, such a freaking awful year,” before continuing with the heartbreaking words: “Thirty years we’ve been talking nonsense, and yet it goes on for a long time.”

The chef, filmed after Dave’s chemotherapy, admitted he was scared when he tasted onions during his treatment.

As he rustled up some chicken and spinach empanadas, he confessed, “All good things start with an onion, you know when I was having my chemotherapy I couldn’t stand the taste of onions!”

On Tuesday it emerged that Dave had left behind a fortune of £1.5million following his tragic death.
