Hairy Bikers star Dave Myers professes he’s ‘got his wings back’ amid cancer battle and reveals he used his comeback Christmas show to cook for life-saving medics

Hairy Bikers star Dave Myers has praised his co-star Si King for helping him in his battle against cancer, for which he continues to receive treatment.

The TV chef, 66, who was diagnosed in May last year, was speaking ahead of the release of Tuesday night's festive special The Hairy Bikers: Coming Home For Christmas.

He confessed that he saw the special as a way to show his gratitude, as he explained: “This time we shared that food with people to whom I also owe my life. There are the nurses, the counselors, the physiotherapists who taught me to walk again.'

His co-star and best friend added movingly: “It was the return for Dave and for me to some sense of normalcy and that was very valuable when things weren't like that for Dave, and that's true by default not for me. ..

'It was wonderful to see Dave driving and saying, 'Are you sure we're not turning left here?'

Dave revealed that he was diagnosed with cancer in May 2022 and is currently still undergoing treatment for the disease.

Last month he revealed that he was 'stable' and back at work, adding that he was 'really enjoying life at the moment', saying: 'I'm doing well. I'm still being treated, but everything seems stable…

'I've been cycling with my best friend again, filming, doing the books and back to work. So actually it's all pretty good. I'm really enjoying life at the moment.'

Speaking about their Christmas special, Dave said: 'The importance of this Christmas special has been huge for me. I really wanted to show our gratitude, just like Si did. We have opened up enough without sharing too much…

'The program is very honest and from the heart…'

'The whole thing worked from start to finish. It was great to get back on the bike together, we set off and Si led so I didn't have to think about where I was going…

'That feeling of doing again what we have been doing for thirty years was magical. Si has shoulders like a bison and it was a joy to follow that silhouette through the landscape. It was like getting my wings back.”

Dave, who has been married to Liliana Orzac since 2011, spoke about the importance of support from loved ones, saying: 'It's fantastic to know that Si has been there…

'A lot of the credit also goes to my wife, she has been through it all with me from the beginning. It is absolutely necessary and I feel very sad for the people who have to go through this alone.”

Speaking about eating during treatment, Dave explained: 'Nutrition is vital when recovering from cancer, one is appetite and the other is getting the calories…

'Sometimes I have to give myself a good talk, because when you feel rough you don't feel like eating, but you have to do it.

There are times when you start eating again, when you look forward to it again. It is important to also find things you like during that journey. They are the things of life.

It doesn't matter if you're a prince or a pauper, everyone has something they like to eat. Pancit noodles now have legendary status for me.'
