If you’ve ever found an old bottle of shampoo and conditioner in the back of your bathroom cabinet, you might have stumbled across a winning combination.
TikTok user and certified trichologist Abbey Yung recently explained why your locks will feel and look luscious after using a drugstore brand shampoo and conditioner instead of a luxury brand.
“Everything you’ve ever been told about drugstore hair care is a lie,” Yung began eye-opening video shared on her TikTok.
“The reason why your hair immediately feels drastically better after using a drugstore shampoo and conditioner is because of the sulfates, the silicones, or both,” she explained.
The expert added that there are ‘too many’ hair care brands that have removed sulphates and silicones from their products, meaning they don’t clean your hair properly.
“Not because it’s better for your hair and scalp, but because it’s part of a marketing strategy to be able to label their products in a certain way that makes you more likely to spend money on them,” Yung claimed.
However, the hair expert said there are “two big problems” with this tactic.
The expert explained that when brands remove effective cleansers, such as sulfates, from shampoos, they take away from that shampoo’s ability to give your hair and scalp the proper cleansing it needs.

“In the exact same way that brands are removing effective conditioning ingredients, like silicones, from their conditioners, they have removed that conditioner’s ability to properly condition and protect their hair,” Yung continued.
“That’s exactly why you’ll notice such an immediate, drastic difference when you switch to a drugstore shampoo and conditioner—you’re finally using products that haven’t eliminated the exact ingredients that make our scalp and us cleaner, softer, smoother, and shinier.” . , more resilient, more manageable, less frizzy, less tangled.”
Users shared their own experiences using drugstore shampoos and conditioners in the comments section — and many agreed that their hair had never looked better.
“Pantene is hated by most stylists, but I had my best hair days using it in the past,” one user wrote.
‘There is no conditioner that conditions like Pantene!’ another agreed.
‘After years of expensive salon products, I returned to Pantene. My hair looks fantastic!’ someone else beamed.
‘Pantene has never been good for my hair. The L’Oréal brand, I can use that and my hair feels great,” another added.
Another hair expert previously revealed how often you should actually wash your hair.
Dr. Crystal Aguh, associate professor of dermatology and member of Olaplex’s Scientific Advisory Board, sheds light on the mistakes people often make in the shower and the two “must-have” products customers couldn’t get enough of in July.

While most only condition the ends of their hair, Dr. Aguh to apply the product from the root to the tip.
“This keeps strands hydrated and minimizes damage from daily wear and tear,” she said.
The professional added that a quick 30-second lather is all that’s needed when washing your hair — and extra cleansing can actually do more harm than good.
As for how many times you should wash your hair, she said it’s determined by your “curl type.”
‘A quick lather of 15 to 30 seconds is all that is needed for an adequate shampoo and cleansing. Double shampooing can be helpful if you have a lot of product buildup,” said Dr. Aguh.
