Russian hackers attacked the European Parliament website and managed to take it offline for hours.
Anonymous Russia, an offshoot of the pro-Russian hacktivist group Killnet, has reportedly launched a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) (opens in new tab)) attack on the European Parliament website.
President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola confirmed (opens in new tab) the incident on Twitter, adding that it is, “IT experts are resisting it and protecting our systems.”

“The availability of the Europarl_EN website is currently externally affected by the high level of external network traffic,” said Dauche. “This traffic is related to a Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attack. EP teams are working to resolve this issue as soon as possible.”
The attack appears to be in response to a recently adopted European Parliament resolution declaring Russia a state sponsor of terrorism and a state that “uses terrorist means”.
A news report published on the European Parliament’s website said MEPs called on the EU to “further isolate Russia internationally, including Russia’s membership of international organizations and bodies such as the United Nations Security Council.
MEPs also want diplomatic ties with Russia to be reduced, EU contacts with official Russian representatives to be kept to an absolute minimum, and Russian state-affiliated institutions in the EU that spread propaganda around the world to be closed and banned. ”
Killnet has been quite an active group lately, but one that hasn’t exactly made a name for itself. It recently managed to take down the websites of multiple airports in the United States (didn’t affect flights), and also targeted JPMorgan Chase, as well as the US Treasury Department.
In all of these incidents, the effects were minor and the attacks were described by the FBI as weak.
