GWS takes hilarious swipe at Damien Hardwick’s big money contract at the Gold Coast Suns: ‘He’d see more muscle growth lifting his paycheck’
- Tigers champion coach has moved to the Gold Coast
- Club uses it in its marketing activities
- Came in second place when they tried to burn GWS
The 2024 AFL season hasn’t even started yet and GWS has already started throwing shade at Damien Hardwick and his high-profile move to the Gold Coast Suns.
One of the biggest changes to the coaching ranks this season will be the three-time premiership-winning coach taking over at the Gold Coast Suns – a club that has yet to play in the AFL finals.
The Suns social media team has already started to reward the club’s major investment with images, training sessions with the coach with a microphone and social media posts.
However, when the Suns marketing department tried to compete against the Giants, they came in second place.
The Gold Coast Suns tried to boost GWS with this image of Damien Hardwick, but were burned by the Giants social media team in response
The exchange was prompted by GWS’s social media team posting a video of Adam Kingsley in his office at Sydney Olympic Park.
While on the phone, he saw the coach lifting a small weight with the caption “Busiest coach in the league” and a flexed bicep emoji.
The Gold Coast Suns took the post as an invitation to get one step ahead of their rivals, posting a video of new coach Hardwick lifting significantly bigger weights in his Gold Coast office with the caption ‘that’s cute’.
GWS then clapped back with a hilarious insult, posting ‘He would see more muscle growth which would increase his salary’, referring to the big money contract Hardwick secured after quitting as Richmond coach in 2023.
Although exact numbers were not released at the time, Hardwick signed a six-year contract with the Suns last year after resigning from the Tigers with a year and a half left on that contract.
Hardwick is a high-profile addition to the Suns and fans will be hoping he can lead them to the finals for the first time
Tigers star Tom Lynch will not be available for the club’s opening game against the Suns
Tigers fans won’t have to wait long to take on their old coach, with Richmond and the Gold Coast going head-to-head in the opening round of the 2024 AFL competition.
However, the Tigers suffered an early blow, with star striker Tom Lynch admitting he will not be ready to play in the match as he is still recovering from a foot injury.
This season the AFL will play a Round Zero with matches in Queensland and New South Wales for competition points before the first round with the normal schedule.
Lynch hopes to return for the first round against Carlton.
“I think round zero might be a bit tough, especially with a five-day break ahead of round 1, so at this stage it’s less likely than likely,” he said.
‘At this stage I’m going to focus more on round 1.
“I’ve really picked up the load over the last three or four weeks and I’m looking forward to transitioning to footy in the coming week.”
