GWS Giants player ‘sought permission’ to dress as a slave character from Quentin Tarantino’s movie Django Unchained from team-mates

A GWS star is reportedly facing a possible sanction from the AFL after allegedly dressing up as a slave character from Quentin Tarantino’s 2012 film Django Unchained during the Giants’ end-of-year function ‘Wacky Wednesday’.

Connor Idun is reportedly one of eight players facing AFL sanctions following the Giants’ post-season celebration.

This week it emerged that several players were facing sanctions from the league after the fancy dress party in a private room in a pub. It is claimed some players dressed up as New York’s World Trade Center, while others dressed up as former NRL player Jarryd Hayne and Australian NBA star Josh Giddey.

Hayne was released from prison earlier this year after his rape conviction was overturned on appeal and charges against him were dropped. Giddey was cleared following a police investigation over claims he had a relationship with an underage girl.

It is also claimed that some players performed ‘unsavory skits’ during the event, with one player allegedly making a joke about disgraced American rap star Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs.

According to sources close to The Age, Idun had dressed up as the character Django, who is played by Jamie Foxx in the film.

During the film, Django is a slave who is freed by a bounty hunter, Dr. King Schultz, played by actor Christoph Watlz.

The outlet adds that Idun and a teammate had reenacted “a wrestling scene” from the film during a skit. Sources added that the defender, who was born in London to an Australian mother and a Ghanaian father, had sought permission to dress as the character from teammates Harry Rowston, Toby Bedford, Leek Aleer and Callum Brown.

It is understood his teammates had said they had no problem with Idun dressing up as the character.

The club’s internal investigation cleared the players of any illegal activity and players are reportedly filing complaints with the AFL today over their sanctions.

There is no allegation that the alleged conduct was criminal.

Idun representatives have been contacted for comment.

It is understood sanctions could be imposed on Thursday, with GWS issuing a statement earlier this week claiming some of the allegations were ‘disturbing and completely contrary to the club’s values and policies’.

The AFLPA has reportedly told The Age it will make no comment until the investigation is complete.

GWS Giant captain Toby Greene would be one player facing a fine of around $20,000. According to journalist Mitch Cleary, the captain “was not directly involved in the skits” but “will receive a severe financial penalty for lack of leadership.”

Greene’s agent, Paul Connors, told SEN on Thursday that the GWS captain understood he “could have done things better”.

“Toby accepts that he is the leader of the club and he needed to improve,” Connors told SEN on Thursday morning.

‘But besides, he was as interested in that crazy Monday as you would have been. He had lost a match in which he had a 44-point lead.

‘He was emotionally exhausted and couldn’t think about anything.

“So yes, Toby accepts that he could have done things better, but again, it is for others to discuss whether $20,000 is too much.”

GWS released a statement earlier this week, writing: The Giants confirmed yesterday that the club is aware of allegations of inappropriate behavior at the players’ end-of-season event last month.

‘The club takes the matter very seriously and has acted quickly after receiving the concerns.

“All parties have cooperated fully with the AFL to ensure the allegations are fully investigated,” the statement said.

“Some of the allegations are distressing and completely contrary to the club’s values and policies.

“There is also a level of misinformation and rumors being spread that is completely inappropriate, especially while the investigation is ongoing.

‘The club will provide further comment once the results of the investigation are known.’
