Australian cyber attack: Guzman y Gomez, Dan Murphy’s, Binge and Event Cinemas customers targeted by hackers

Thousands of customers have been caught up in a massive cyber attack on some of Australia’s best-known brands.

At least 15,000 Australians with online accounts at eatery Guzman y Gomez, bottle shop giant Dan Murphy’s, video streaming service Binge and Event Cinemas have had their personal details compromised over the past two months in what authorities say was a targeted attack.

It is understood that scammers have been purchasing stolen credentials from foreign cybercriminals and gaining access to customers’ online accounts to conduct fraudulent transactions.

Affected customers have their credit card information stored on company websites or have gift cards or store credit for online purchases.

More than 15,000 Australians are involved in the latest cyber attack, including customers of Mexican fast food chain Guzman y Gomez

The number of affected customers continues to rise and it is feared that many are still unaware of the fraudulent activity.

Those who use the same login credentials for multiple online accounts face the greatest threat.

It is alleged that some scammers have shared details and receipts of their fraudulent purchases via messaging app Telegram, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

One scammer purchased more than $1,000 worth of alcohol from Dan Murphy’s in one transaction.

The latest cyberattack comes days after major online retailer The Iconic was targeted.

Other companies targeted by cybercriminals in the past 18 months include Optus, Telstra and Medibank.
