An advertisement for a rental property on an online marketplace was quickly removed after offering ‘free rent in exchange for sex’.
The property in Claremont, northwest of Hobart, recently listed on Gumtree for $245 a week and was advertised as pet, child and 420 (marijuana) friendly for a female tenant.
However, the $245 per week rate would be waived for a tenant “in exchange for sex.”
According to the advertisement, the property would be suitable for a ‘carer’ or a ‘single parent with one child’.
The person who posted the ad wrote to a potential tenant “must be clean and disease free.”

In return, they would get their own room and parking space, a locked door, and storage.
Gumtree quickly removed the post as it violated their community guidelines.
According to their website, Gumtree doesn’t allow ads that “contain illegal activity…and we prohibit any activity that may cause harm.”
This includes physical or psychological harm, animal welfare issues, environmental harm or any other illegal activity.
“If you believe you have identified possible illegal activity on our site, please report it to us immediately,” the Gumtree website reads.
“The Sex Industry Act 2005 has, whether in terms of legality or not, specific offenses related to ‘applying for a job,’ said a Tasmania Police spokesman.
“However, each individual case must be assessed to determine whether criminal offenses may have been committed.”
A Gumtree spokesperson told The Mercury: “In the event that Gumtree detects such ads, or if it is reported by the community, we will take action on the ad and, if appropriate, on the user’s account.”
“In the event that it is necessary to call the police, we have a police liaison to handle the matter.”

The ad was posted on the Tenants Union of Tasmania with the caption: ‘Earlier this week we heard reports of a shed with no bathroom or kitchen being put up for rent at $175 a week and thought this was bad, then we got this. ‘
“A room in a Claremont share house offered on Gumtree to women for sex,” the post reads.
“This is a gross exploitation of vulnerable women affected by the housing crisis.
“No woman who has sex in exchange for a roof over her head freely and willingly consents.”
One user commented on the post, writing, “Disgusting…the advertisers should be sued and jailed.”
