Economic liberalisation that began in the 1990s appears to have benefited Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Delhi the most, as their share in national GDP increased significantly between 1990-91 and 2023-24, a working paper by the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (EAC-PM) shows.
Maharashtra’s share in national GDP fell from 14.6 per cent in 1990-91 to 13.3 per cent in 2023-24. It still tops among states. While Tamil Nadu’s share fell from 8.7 per cent in 1960-61 to 7.1 per cent in 1990-91, it has seen a turnaround, with its share in national GDP reaching 8.9 per cent in 2023-24.
In Gujarat too, there was a turnaround, with the share rising from 6.4 percent in 1990-91 to 8.1 percent in 2022-23.
With the emergence of Bengaluru as a technology hub, Karnataka’s share rose from 5.3 per cent in 1990-91 to 8.2 per cent in 2023-24.
