A guinea pig has been left at the entrance to a tube station with a heartbreaking note reading ‘I need a new owner’.

The young brown and white pet, aged around six months to a year, was discovered by station staff in Canning Town, east London, at 4.20pm on February 18.

Shahnaz Ahmad, an RSPCA inspector, collected the pet and took him to an animal welfare centre.

She said: ‘He seemed healthy and well cared for.

‘It is very sad that someone has abandoned their pet in this way.

‘We encourage people to contact local animal welfare organizations for help with pet care, rather than leaving them in a vulnerable situation like this.

‘This guinea pig was found alone, guinea pigs are social by nature and normally prefer to be with one or more guinea pigs.

‘A guinea pig can develop abnormal behavior and suffer if left without companionship.

‘Abandoning pets this way is incredibly cruel and never the answer.

‘If anyone has any information we would ask them to contact the RSPCA appeal line, confidential on 0300 123 8018.’

The guinea pig, newly named DiscoPig, will soon be available for rehoming – with a partner – at the RSPCA.
