Fake tan stains and heavy make-up on bed linen and towels cost the hotel industry nearly £1.8 million a year, according to research.

Laundries are said to throw away 224 tons of sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers and towels each year after being soiled by the products.

A hotelier had to throw away a significant amount of linens after hosting a bodybuilding competition in which competitors dressed themselves in a fake tan.

Linen cleaner Regenex, who came up with the numbers, asked whether users of fake tan or make-up that stain hotel sheets should pay more.

Paul Hamilton, technical director at Regenex, said: ‘I talk to many long-suffering laundry owners and managers.

“They tell me that fake tan and makeup are the blemishes they dread the most.

‘The margins for the hospitality industry are tight and hoteliers have to lose them where they can make up for it. Maybe it’s time they said they’d press charges.’

Regenex says demand for its stained linen recovery service has increased.
