Guess who? Aussie ‘rock & roll royalty’ looks unrecognisable during rare TV appearance

He is an Australian rock star and a founding member of a legendary Australian pub band.

The Sydney-born musician has been active in the music industry since the early 80s and has collaborated with some of the biggest names in the industry, including David Bowie and Jon Stevens.

The passionate rocker is known for his incredible energy on stage and for never giving up, even as he approaches his 60th birthday.

Of course it’s Steve Balbi, the legendary Australian bass guitarist of Noiseworks, who played on their biggest hits, including Take Me Back and No Lies.

Steve was a guest on Channel Nine’s Today Extra on Wednesday morning and surprised presenters David Campbell and Sylvia Jeffreys with his striking appearance.

Balbi has said goodbye to his signature mullet and clean-shaven look of the ’80s, instead sporting windswept, jet-black hair and a stylish goatee.

Yet he still had the same mischievous grin as in his younger years.

The energetic artist told the presenters he was excited about the release of his upcoming solo album Breakdown and his tour of Sydney.

“I love telling stories and telling it like it is. I love it as an eight-year-old, I can’t wait to get back into it, I feel so grateful,” Steve began.

“I try to dress like a rock star and act like a human being.”

Steve will perform to a sold-out crowd at the Sydney Opera House on Saturday.

Steve rose to fame in 1986 as a member of the legendary Australian rock band Noiseworks, led by Jon Stevens. They scored hits with Take Me Back, No Lies and Touch.

The band broke up in 1992 and reunited in 2016.

Balbi remains part of the band to this day.

He also had success with his musical side projects Electric Hippies and Mi-Sex.
