A Hamptons market has sparked outrage over the sale of guacamole for $29 a pound — more than four times the price of most stores.
The tub, sold by the Seafood Shop in Wainscott, New York, was criticized online for its outrageous price tag.
Joe Marino Jr., a 36-year-old real estate investor, posted the price drop on his TikTok account and told his followers, “I think we should draw the line at $29 guacamole.”
“This was also just a common species, not a special species,” Marino said. ‘[Prices have] worse, I think over the last few years,’ Marino added.

The video has now been viewed more than 1 million times and users have expressed their outrage. “Let you fly?” joked one commenter.
Another added: “Not even Bezos will buy it at that price.”
Marino, whose online address is @theretiredmillenial, said the Seafood Shop is a “good destination” for Ina Garten, Jimmy Fallen and Katy Perry, among others.
Wainscott, where the offending guacamole was on sale, is a celebrity hot spot that has been frequented by the likes of Martha Stewart, Jimmy Buffett, and Richard Gere.
The 36-year-old defended the purchase after commentators suggested buying the pot and encouraged companies to raise prices even further.
“A friend from out of town picked it up without looking,” he claimed.
“He ran as a good gesture to get some chips and walk in some oysters, and I just threw it in the car,” said Marino.

“Then I was sitting there in the backyard and I looked down and saw the price, and my gut reaction was, ‘I can’t believe this.'”
The Seafood Shop’s hefty costs, he says, are at odds with the broader market for crushed avocados the Wall Street Journalwho recently reported an 18 percent year-over-year decline in Hass avocados.
“Right now, we’re seeing avocado prices that are the lowest we’ve seen in several years, and that definitely helps us,” Chipotle Chief Financial Officer Jack Hartung told the outlet.
Anoop Rai, a finance professor at the Frank G. Zarb School of Business at Hofstra University on Long Island, told The Post that “the most likely explanation [for the extreme markup] is a combination of high demand and a customer base that can afford these prices.’
He also explained the price by suggesting that a convenience fee was probably involved here as well.
It’s summer in the Hamptons and no party or dinner is complete without avocado dips. Add to that the [vehicular] traffic congestion, high-end consumers would rather pay than look for alternatives… most of whom probably don’t even look at the prices.” Rai added.
