In March 2022, Tommy revealed that he had recovered from throat cancer when he lent his celebrity status to raise the profile of an NHS campaign encouraging cancer checks.

He recalled: ‘I went to my GP for an unrelated problem and while there he discovered a lump in his throat which worried him a bit.

“He said it might not be anything, but he’d rather I go and get checked out and unfortunately it turned out to be cancerous.”

I had to go in right away and have surgery to remove it. Now I am fully recovered and I am even playing football again!

‘If something in your body doesn’t feel right, contact your GP and book an appointment. Whatever the outcome, the NHS is here to help.

In 2002, Tommy suffered a breast cancer scare when he found two lumps in his chest.

The father of three immediately sought medical attention and although his doctor said it was probably nothing, Tommy was sent to investigate the lumps.

The television builder said Mirror at the time: ‘I was being a bit type about the whole thing. I just dove into my work and then went to day surgery where the lumps were removed under general anesthesia.

“It was only then that I realized that this could be really serious and that I could have breast cancer, just like my relatives.”

Fortunately for Tommy, test results showed the bumps to be benign, but he confessed that it was “sort of a wake-up call.”
